Zoheb Momin’s Unseen Swayambhu Cover

Life is a series of firsts. The first day of school or college, the first love, the birth of our first child—all these remain indelibly imprinted within our minds, shaping the narratives by which we live out our existence and form our identities as individuals. Each initial one represents a stepping stone, indicating a span within which we should anticipate either pleasure, or apprehension, or sadness mingled with happiness and melancholy at times.

How Zoheb Momin Brings Swayambhu’s Firsts to Canvas

The creation of an artwork often parallels these first experiences. There is a story behind every piece, a journey of inspiration, struggle, and eventual realization. One such story is of the first cover for our inaugural issue of “Incognito.” The cover was a rough sketch by the talented Zoheb Momin ji, a piece that captured the essence of the issue but, unfortunately, revealed too much about the personality behind the “Incognito” moniker. It was supposed to be first cover of Incognito Issue 1 HindiWhenever I see this initial sketch, I feel a pang of loss for what could have been one of the finest covers of “Swayambhu.” The artwork was exquisite, but its candid nature meant it had to be set aside. Thankfully, Zoheb Momin ji understood the necessity of this decision and created another brilliant cover, which now graces the “Incognito” Hindi version. Before this, I admired his work on the “Bullseye” covers—each one a testament to his skill and creativity. Today, I am excited to share these rough pencils by Zoheb ji with you all. It was scanned yesterday, and seeing it brings a renewed appreciation for the artistic journey and the beautiful firsts that shape our collective experience. In life and art, firsts are unforgettable. They are the building blocks of our memories and the foundation of our stories. As we continue to create and experience, let’s cherish these moments and the unique paths they lead us down.Dive into the captivating world of Indian comic books published by Swayambhu comics and experience the creativity and culture of Indian comics firsthand!

Is Satyug the Best New Indian Superhero in Comics? Let’s Find out!

Is Satyug the Best New Indian Superhero in Comics? Let’s Find out!

Ranking Indian superheroes can be a tricky task, as different people consider different things when ranking their favorite superheroes. To create Satyug, the new-age Indian superhero, I considered four factors: powers/abilities, character development, iconic costume, and impact on society.

Powers/Abilities

A superhero’s unique powers or abilities can make them stand out from the rest. For example, Superman’s ability to fly and his super strength, or Spiderman’s web-slinging and wall-crawling abilities.

Satyug was initially planned as a one-shot comic book, but the character’s potential for endless possibilities convinced me to turn him into a superhero. His name, a combination of two common names, makes him unique and as the name indicates a sign of hope in an Indian setting. Satyug’s transformation into a superhero with a costume is an unorthodox take on the concept of a ghost possessing someone, but it makes him the first of his kind in India. This was a risky and unorthodox take. To some people, it might have sounded silly at first.

Although, I was very inclined toward the idea that an Indian superhero should feel like an Indian superhero. We are not interested in seeing one more Superman or Batman. We already have those.

Character Development

A well-developed superhero with a compelling backstory and personal struggles can make them more relatable and interesting to readers/viewers. This allows audiences to emotionally connect with the character and invest in their journey.

Satyug, the protagonist of our comic book series, was in no hurry to catch a flight. Maybe he was hoping for an upgrade to first-class or a more scenic route. Who knows? But what we do know is that there was still so much to tell in his story. As much as we wanted to dive into the superhero genre, we had to lay the foundation for it in the first issue. And boy, were our readers in for a surprise when they saw Satyug donning a vigilante costume in the second issue! It was a risky move, but one that paid off as fans embraced the new direction of the series.

But the real challenge came when we had to design a superhero costume that would make Satyug stand out and appeal to a wider audience. We debated whether to introduce the new costume so soon or not, but in the end, we had to go for it. As an independent comic book publisher, we didn’t have the luxury of dragging out the story for too long. We had to set smaller goals and work towards completing the first arc of the series within five issues. And you know what? Our readers loved the temporary costume so much that we were torn between keeping it and introducing the new one.

Overall, the journey of creating Satyug’s superhero persona was a wild ride, but we’re glad we did it. Who knew a simple flight delay could lead to such an epic adventure?

Iconic Costume

A superhero’s costume is often an important part of their identity and can help them stand out from others. A memorable costume can become iconic and help to define the character.

Creating an Indian superhero costume is no easy feat, let me tell you. It’s not like we could just throw a cape on Satyug and call it a day. No, no, no. We had to put in some serious effort. Caio worked on sketches for over a month. And let me tell you, deciding on the right shape for those spandex pants was a real challenge. But in the end, we nailed it.

Now, when it came to designing the mask, I had some opinions. I wanted to ensure we could see as much of Satyug’s face as possible. You know, so he could really emote and connect with readers. And then Ketan, bless his soul, reminded us that a superhero’s hair is just as important as their powers. I mean, imagine Batman without his luscious locks. It just wouldn’t work, right?

Impact on Society

A superhero’s impact on society, whether it’s through inspiring people to be their best selves or taking a stand against injustice, can also make them stand out among others. The influence a superhero has on the world they inhabit can be a defining characteristic of the character.

Well, Satyug is definitely not your average Joe! He’s got his own unique set of powers, a killer costume, and an impact on society that’s out of this world! And as an independent comic book publisher, it’s important to set achievable goals, like completing the first arc of the series within five issues. But don’t worry, Satyug’s journey as a superhero is far from over! We’ve got some exciting plans in store for him that will keep readers on the edge of their seats. Satyug’s future issues will feature him becoming a symbol of hope and a sign of change for society. So buckle up, folks, because this superhero is just getting started!

In the words of comic book artist Neal Adams, “The idea of a superhero is something that’s transcended language and cultures.” This sentiment is especially true in India, where superheroes like Shaktimaan and Nagraj have gained immense popularity.

With the right storytelling, character development, and fan base, Satyug has the potential to become the best Indian superhero. As author Stan Lee once said, “A superhero is a symbol of good, fighting for justice and fairness in the world.” Satyug embodies these values and has the power to inspire and entertain readers for years to come.

The future holds exciting plans for Satyug’s journey as an Indian superhero, and who knows he might become the best Indian superhero someday. Go here to Read Satyug Comics. He is the first Indian superhero of Swayambhu Comics.

Satyug – The Journey So Far

Alok, Haddi, and Sudeep Menon

I began writing the story of Satyug, originally named Alok and Haddi, in October 2020. The story was complete, but I wanted to write the script myself. During the time I was working on the script, I shared an idea and imagination with Mr. Sudeep for Incognito, and work on it began. After working on the Alok and Haddi script for a few months, I felt I might not do justice to my story, so I sought Mr. Sudeep’s help again. He agreed to write the script but wanted to change its form slightly. The first change was made to the story of Satya, which Mr. Sudeep turned into a more mass appeal story. The accident associated with Satya that I had described was quite dark, perhaps making it difficult for everyone to connect with. We’ll talk about this another day.

The beginning and end of the Satyug presented before you are the same, but the story of the accident that occurs with the era is different.

The second change was made to the names of the characters because not much thought had been put into their names. After some discussion, Alok and Haddi became Satya and Yug.

Character Design

After Mr. Sudeep wrote the story, we started looking for an illustrator. After talking to Mr. Ravi, I learned how to commission character designs; he told me that foreign artists could draw comic books and design characters. He had given me this advice before work on Incognito began. However, due to lack of prior experience, I commissioned a couple of character designs, but they were halted mid-way for some reason.

Later, I better understood that character design requires a lot of dedication. An artist solely working on character design might not do justice to the characters as much as an artist working on the entire comic book would.

Caio Pegado

Then began the search for an artist, leading us to Kayo Pegado. Before reaching him, we had test pages done by two other foreign artists. Our criteria included artwork quality and a budget limit, which we could not exceed, limiting our options. This applied to both domestic and foreign artists.

In June 2021, we finally found Kayo Pegado, whose 3 trial page thumbnails were immediately approved by Mr. Ravi. The reason for including Mr. Ravi in my team was to help me make the right decisions from the start. I remember clearly not having any idea how to evaluate an artist. What thumbnails are and how to decide what to expect from an artist based on them.

They say if you have less understanding of a task, you should trust those more experienced than you, and that’s precisely what I did in the early days of Swayambhu, spending more time understanding the comic-making process.

I forgot to mention that when I first read the script by Mr. Sudeep, I was delighted that I had given him the freedom to write Satyug, which was the right decision.

During this time, Santosh Pillewar took charge of coloring in Satyug Issue 1, doing a great job. Satyug Issue 1 was published in August 2021. The discussion on what to do next had already started even before Satyug Issue 1 was presented to everyone.

Satyug – The Superhero of Kalyug

I was clear about the direction in which to take the story of Satyug. With each issue of Satyug, I wanted to shine a light on the evils and crimes in society and put forth the idea that we should fear our surrounding society more. At the same time, I wanted to establish Satyug as a superhero.

Having a superhero named Satyug in Kalyug and the way he sees spirits and delivers justice was working perfectly for the series. Mr. Sudeep was not in favor of making Satyug a superhero. He is not easily convinced about anything. But I had some ideas from the start that I did not want to compromise on.

Satyug 2 – Case of Necrophilia

When I told Mr. Sudeep about the next case in Satyug 2 involving necrophilia, he hesitated for a moment and asked if I really wanted to show something like this. I unhesitatingly said yes to working on it. According to me, nothing is hidden from our society anymore. We come across something daily that blurs the line between human and beast. Discussing such topics openly has become more important than ever.

The Process of Creating a Superhero

Kayo had simple instructions for Satyug’s costume design: keep it as simple as possible. The reason was to advance the character of Satyug in such a way that it didn’t seem like a hastily done experiment. Kayo did exactly that, but Renen Leno added the finishing touches with his coloring, which was like giving water to the thirsty. Thinking of a comic character, bringing it to life, and then turning it into a superhero character that stands out and attracts people’s attention is a very difficult and delicate process.

Mr. Sudeep has given a new twist to the world of Satyug with Issue 2. It gives a new lease of life to the Satyug series and generates more interest for the next issue among the people.

Expanding the World of Satyug

Satyug was written in such a way that if we ever think of making a TV series or movie on it, it could be done easily and at a low cost. But if we just keep releasing issues with only that thought, it might not reach the heights for the comic readers. After linking Satyug’s world with supernatural and divine powers, we hope the series will be more appreciated and liked as much as the Incognito series is being liked.

Do listen to this song that expresses the thoughts associated with the Satyug series. To uproot the tree of lies from the root, Yug and Satya have come.

Satyug 3

Satyug 3 delves into a dramatic confrontation between the series’ heroes and their adversaries, setting the stage for a thrilling narrative. The story unfolds with escalating tensions between the local community and corrupt political forces, leading to a series of protests against land acquisition for industrial purposes. Amidst this chaos, supernatural elements intertwined with the struggles of the common people are introduced, adding depth and intrigue. As the conflict escalates, Satyug, the superhero, engages in a battle against a sinister force, showcasing his commitment to justice and the protection of the innocent. This installment blends social commentary with mythological elements, promising an engaging mix of action, drama, and supernatural suspense, further enriching the Satyug series narrative.

Satyug 4 and In-House Animated Series Project

As we venture further into the Satyug series, we are thrilled to announce that Satyug 4 is nearing completion and will be published later this year. Even more exciting, we have already begun working on the finale, promising an epic conclusion to this beloved series.

In addition to the comics, we have expanded the Satyug universe into a new medium—an animated web series. Thanks to the creative genius of Pranay Khadatkar and his team, the first episode is now available on YouTube. This animated series embarks on a separate storyline, introducing viewers to intriguing new characters and embarking on Satyug’s thrilling journey. This expansion allows fans to experience the Satyug universe in a dynamic new way, bringing the stories and characters to life through animation.

As we continue to develop the Satyug series, both in print and animation, we remain committed to delivering compelling stories that captivate our audience. Stay tuned for more updates on Satyug 4 and the animated web series as we explore new frontiers in this superhero saga.

Signing off, we invite you to join Satyug on his extraordinary adventures, filled with action, mythology, and the eternal fight between good and evil.

Would we like to see the comic book industry grow or just survive a bit longer?

Introduction

A fading entertainment industry since the 2000s, comic books have finally begun to breathe new life into it. Are we seeing a resurgence? It would be premature to say so, but Indian comics have gained popularity in recent years. There are several reasons for this, including the rapid influx of new publishers. It has given hope to avid comic book readers and has also injected interest among the readers; there are now people of all ages reading comic books and collecting them.

Why did Indian comic book readership decline?

In India, comic books have always been associated with kids. My parents and all the people I saw growing up, it was only kids who took an interest in comics. And even now, as an adult, when I read vintage comic books, I don’t think I can pick one and suggest it to someone who loves reading books but could fall in love with comics too. Who is to blame for this? Publishers, digitalization, exposure to TV media, or someone else—there are many thoughts that have crossed my mind since 2018 when I resumed reading comic books after a 16-year hiatus. I have been part of several comic groups where this has been the hottest topic several times. Why couldn’t the comics rise again? Why couldn’t it reach the masses again?

The first obvious reason was the impact of TV. The sales started declining with the arrival of television and got worse with each passing year as computers, video games, and smartphones became more popular modes of entertainment for kids.

The scenario wasn’t different with western comics either, as Marvel and DC were barely surviving, and Marvel went on the verge of bankruptcy too. But breaking into movies helped them survive as a comic book publication as well.

what is the problem solver

What is the problem solver?

When you see the two things separately (movies and comics), western comics aren’t doing that great even after getting popularity from their cinematic universe. In fact, manga sales have just outperformed American comics recently in the United States.

So the question of how manga outperforms American comics arises. Nowadays, Marvel is everywhere. In this way, we can see our beloved superhero once every quarter of a year and in a web series in the meantime. On the other hand, manga sales are backed by only anime, which doesn’t have the same reach and same amount of audience if we can ignore the recent surge of anime movies being widely released on the silver screen.

Enough with the questions and doubts! right? The answer is plain and simple: Mangas are better. The answer might not be to your acceptance if you haven’t read manga or watched anime a lot. But one who has been a fan of both comic books and manga can say this even if they don’t know the reason.

how is manga different

How is Manga different?

It was 2001 when Dragon Ball Z first aired in India. The buzz of the show among the kids was such that it became an instant hit and the favorite show of all the kids at that time. After a couple of years, the Pokémon world made a separate fan base in India. The same can be said for other anime shows such as Bay Blade, Naruto, One Piece, and others. And if you think that’s it, you are wrong! That’s the most beautiful thing about manga and anime. They have always come up with a new story that gets a hit among the younger generation of that time. It was Dragon Ball Z, Naruto, and One Piece in the 2000s. In the 2010s, Death Note, Hunter x Hunter, and Full Metal Alchemist were popular, followed by Attack on Titans, My Hero Academia, One Punch Man in the 2015s, and Demon Slayer in the 2020s. They have always come up with something that has become a bridge between the younger and older generations. They never ignored the younger generation and didn’t make the mistake like Western and Indian comics to cash in on the cards of nostalgia for the 90s kids. I was born in 1988 and count myself as an avid comic book reader today. Yes, I was buying the vintage comics, but stopped buying them soon when I realized that am only buying them but not reading them at the same rate. I can buy the same comic with different covers as many times as a publisher wants, but would that help us get better? Yes, it will fill up the pockets of a publisher, but it won’t help us reach new readers.

A new comic book about your favorite superhero that you have been reading for the past 30 years might not have the same impact on a new comic book reader. And even if it could, this young reader would have to read hundreds of comic books to enjoy it as much as you do. This is a big issue. I won’t hesitate in saying that if you could find even a few hundred readers who would have such patience in modern times.

Is nostalgia killing the comic book world or helping it grow?

It would be too harsh to say it is killing the comic world, but I think it isn’t helping it grow either. The biggest flaw of American and Indian comic books is that their worlds and characters never progress, and when they do, they come back to their roots again with a reboot. On the other hand, the manga is written in a way that its world progresses in one direction. The characters evolve, they lose their dear ones once and for all, and there is a definite end, even if it comes after several years. Manga readers love this. And this is their USP. They do not rely on a person to cash them endlessly.

Although I haven’t read a lot of manga, I have watched hundreds of anime. And the essence of both anime and manga is the same. One of the other prime factors of their success is the wide range of genres they cover. They have manga for kids, adults, and for teenagers. They have manga on sports such as soccer, basketball, etc.; hobbies such as singing, dancing, etc.; history; action; academics; and what not.

I hope you can see the big picture here. The manga industry looks like a huge literary library. One can choose manga based on their favorite genre, unlike western and Indian comics where the primary focus is always the superhero genre.

It is not that Indian comic books aren’t exciting. Nostalgia pays off for the 90s or older generation, but if this is being seen as the rise of Indian comics, then you are wrong.

The Rise of the New Age of Indian Comic Books

The new age publishers are coming in, which excites me more, and I think they can only help us revive the comic book industry. The New Age comic books are exciting and comprehensive, with something for everyone.

The comic book sales in India aren’t as exciting as the sales of western comics, but with the introduction of more than a dozen new comic book publishers in the last year, the future looks exciting. The OTT market is exciting, and the recent news that Yali’s the Village has been picked up for an Amazon web series is icing on the cake for the Indian comic community. Comics are the cheapest way to get your IP published and recognized. Breaking into any OTT platform can raise enough capital for a comic book publisher to get going and make the comic book industry grow more.

There are a number of factors that the new age of comic books is doing in the right manner. First, availing the comic books in Hindi and English both, makes them more accessible to a wider audience. Second, these comics are often rooted in Indian mythology and culture, which makes them more relatable to Indian readers. Third, the quality of Indian comics has immensely improved in recent years, which is the need of the hour because, nowadays, readers are exposed to international content more than ever.

So if you’re looking for something new to read, be sure to check out the latest Indian comic books. Thanks to the growing comic culture in India, I would like to mention some of the exciting comic book publishers you should check out other than Swayambhu Comics.

This is an exciting time for Indian comics. The industry is growing and evolving, and it’s attracting a lot of attention both at home and abroad. If you’re interested in learning more about Indian comics, you should join some of the best Indian comic Facebook groups. The following are my recommendations.
